This map shows the regions
of the world where Baluchi is commonly spoken in the eastern
territories of Afghanistan and in the region of Beluchistan
(red circle). The language is in the Iranian family of languages
descended from the Indo-Iranian branch of Indo-European. Baluchi
is most closely related to Avestan,
Kurdish, Pashto,
and the extinct language of Sogdian.
It is somewhat more distantly related to Old
Persian and Persian.
Like modern Persian, Baluchi is marked by hundreds of loan-words
from Arabic.
